"If I Could Only Stay Asleep" is the fifth master to have remained unissued during Patsy Cline's lifetime.

On 30 September 1954, Patsy Cline signed her first recording contract with William A. McCall, Jr., president of 4 Star Records located in Pasadena, California. A strict leasing and distribution deal was eventually settled with Decca Records of New York, and Cline was to record in Nashville and her product was to be issued on the Coral subsidiary label.

As of her third session, the Coral/Decca leasing agreement had changed and subsequent Cline product was issued on the Decca banner. Cline remained under 4 Star contract from her first session through to the January 27, 1960 session. Later, during 1960, Cline signed her second and final recording contract with Decca Records directly, where she remained until her death.
