After recording for RCA Victor and Decca, he joined the ‘Grand Ole Opry’ in 1943. His own radio program, Midnight Jamboree, helped launch the careers of the Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley. His drawling vocal style, unaffected lyrics, and espousal of the electric guitar made him a major influence on honky tonk music.
