This was the first chart single for Wilson, a native of Detroit. He had been in the group The Dominoes, but this was his first release as a solo artist. Jackie was with Billy Wards Dominoes from 1953 to 1957. He went on to record over fifty hit singles over a repertoire that included R&B, pop, soul, doo-wop and easy listeneing before relapsing into a coma following a collapse on stage during a 1975 benefit concert. By the time of his death in 1984, he had become one of the most influential soul artists of his generation. The song Reet Petite was featured in the film Corina Corina 1994
In British slang, "Reet" means "Righteous."
